What job seekers can learn from the presidential campaign -

What job seekers can learn from the presidential campaign - Presidential campaigns in the U.S. make me think a lot about job seekers, and not because jobs and who can create the most jobs in Washington are the #1 topics on everyones minds. Lets face it, running for office is the longest, extended interview anyone could imagine. The final presidential debate is tonight. Based on watching some of my favorite political shows over the weekend, it seems like both candidates will be planning to turn a conversation about international issues into a referendum on domestic issues, which statistically is a more needle moving topic for undecided voters. If you want to see some masterful examples of, Thats an interesting question, but let me tell you about this other topic Im more focused on, be sure to watch the debate. However, dont plan to take a lesson from the candidates playbooks, as interviewers are unlikely to be impressed by candidates who dodge questions in favor of talking about points that havent yet come up in conversation. The infographic below, compiled by Spark Hire, an online video resume and interviewing platform, looks at the presidential election in the context of your own job search. Please comment and let me know if youre learning anything either what to do, or what NOT to do during your search by watching our candidates. Political icon photo by DonkeyHotey

7 Steps to Quitting Your Job with Style and Class

7 Steps to Quitting Your Job with Style and ClassAt some point, youre going to need to write a resignation letter. Maybe you have to quit because this toxic job is driving you insane, and youre leaving to teach yoga in Antarctica. Maybe you got a great new jobyay Or maybe your political scandal is about to hit TMZ, and you need to find a way to say youre sorry and leaving to spend more time with your family. Whatever the circumstances, a good resignation letter is pretty similar across the board. googletag.cmd.push(function() googletag.display(div-gpt-ad-1467144145037-0) ) Here are six basic steps to follow when its time to say goodbyeso you can make aya youre quiting your job with style and class.1. Be positive that this is what you want.If you have a new gig lined up, thats pretty definitive. But if you dont, make sure youre bedrngnis doing this as a passing whim. There are no backsies once you put something in writing. And even if you manage to say just kidding and rescind your r esignation, thats not going to create much trust or goodwill among the powers that be.2. If possible, give your boss a heads up.A quick meeting to let him or her know that youre leaving is a nice courtesy. It can help ease the cold, hard facts in the email or letter to follow. It can also make your transition out easier, if he or she feels looped in and not blindsided by the news. After all, this person is one of the people fruchtwein likely to be directly impacted by your leaving.3. Pick your format. Some companies might require a formal paper letter. Others might not have any specific rulesin which case an email to your boss is probably fine. Do a little due diligence with HR before you drop the official note.4. Hit all the necessary paper trail points.Your resignation letter should include a statement of the facts surrounding your departure, but only the ones that pertain directly to your job ending.Im leaving the company. (The reason is not necessary to include.)I will be leaving on X date. (Check your companys policy to see if theres minimum notice you need to give.)I will be available to help with the transition until that date.5. Check to make sure the tone is neutral.Dont talk about how excited you are about your new job, or how much you hated your current job by the end. This letter is not a place for venting, bus-throwing, or grudge-ing. It wouldnt hurt to show mild regret that youre leaving, even if that part is ever so slightly disingenuous.6. Proofread it.This is going to be part of your official record with the company, so make sure the information is accurate, especially the end date.7. Thank your boss for the opportunity youve had.If youre unhappy, squash the urge to be snarky. Once upon a time, this job welches an exciting opportunity, and regardless of why youre moving on, you did get experience and knowledge along the way.At this point, youre ready to send it and start your goodbye tour with a clear conscience.

How I Find Success in My Role as a New Working Mother

How I Find Success in My Role as a New Working Mother I began working for Ingersoll Rand Inc. in January of 2015 as the Social Recruiting Program Lead. Im the face behind all of the social posts you read, but Im also a new mom. In August of 2018, my husband, Trey, and I welcomed ur first son, George. As a first-time mom, I didnt know what to expect about maternity leave or what the transition back to work would look like. Luckily, Ingersoll Rand made the transition easy. This welches a tremendous help. It enabled me to slowly ease back into my role and learn how to balance being a mom and an employee without feeling like I was failing at both. In addition to a phased return, I was also able to keep a flexible work schedule where I can work from home a few days a week. This has been a saving grace for me and my family and has provided continued work-life balance. I am grateful to work for a company that supports me as an employee and in my career growth, but also in my journey as a mom .Recently, I spoke to Fairygodboss about my experience as a working mom, my advicefor new mothers who are navigating work and motherhood, and how Ingersoll Rand has supported me throughout this transition. Check out my responses below. What type of programs did/does Ingersoll Rand offer to new and expectant mothers?Ingersoll Rand offers paid parental leave for four weeks, in addition to paid leave of absence. While theres not a policy in place, my company does let us phase our return to work, by allowing us to work part-time for a set period of time then return full-time after parental leave. They also offer maternity coaching and various return-to-work programs, etc.How has your morning routine changed since becoming a mom?Ingersoll Rands office is about an hour from my house, so since having my son, I work from home mora often. This helps my husband and I balance morning drop off at daycare. He and I are also both early risers and typically start working between 7 and 730 a.m., so I wake up a little bit earlier now to get my son and me ready for the day.Why do you think your company is a particularly great place to be a working mom?I would say its a combination of our parental leave, phased return-to-work and flexible/remote work options that makes working here so great Like most infants in daycare, my son gets sick often, and my flexible work and supportive coworkers make it easy for me to meet his needs. Ingersoll Rand also offers great health benefits as well as back-up childcare, should I need itHow has your role as a new mom made you a better employee?I think being a mom has made me better at time management. Now that Im a mom and I try to compartmentalize family time and work time, I need to make the most of every minute.Whats your go-to stress-relief activity or routine?Cooking I have always loved to cook. It reminds me of helping my mom make dinner when I was a child. My mom worked and she would have a homemade meal on the table every night. I dont kno w how she did it, but there is something rewarding about my family coming together to enjoy a meal and talk about our day. What kinds of boundaries to you follow (if any) to separate work and family time? From 530-730 p.m., I am in complete mom-mode. I keep my computer away from me and try to stay away from any devices so I can spend time with my son.Whats your 1 tip for new moms who are navigating the delicate balance of working and mothering?Try not to be hard on yourself as you adjust to working motherhood. Its hard and it takes time to find a routine that works for your family, so take the time you need.Part of this article was originally published oningersollrand.com.--Fairygodboss is proud to partner with Ingersoll Rand.Find a job there today

7 Ways to Create Your Own Luck in the Job Search

7 Ways to Create Your Own Luck in the Job Search7 Ways to Create Your Own Luck in the Job SearchTips for Getting a Job How to Create Your Own LuckForget luck of the draw. Draw your own luckKids use lucky talismans and rituals all the time, trusting that a particular red shirt or a spell repeated three times to grant a good grade on the next exam. As adults, most of us have stopped believing that crossed fingers will land us the next perfect job, instead relying on tried and true job-seeking tips and techniques. And yet, with St. Patricks Day upon us, there may be something to reigniting the old magic.Even psychologists say that athletes who wear their lucky socks for the big game arent wrong There may be some advantages to following superstitions even if they look silly. While rituals alone may not be enough, combining some good-luck charms with strategy tweaks might just create a job search success Here are seven lucky tips for getting a job.Use the right wordsOK, so maybe these ar e not magic words found in spellbooks, but you must be koranvers that you are using keywords intentionally and strategically when it comes to describing your skills and qualifications. Before you get to a real person, your resume may have to clear electronic gatekeepers like the ATS (applicant tracking system). A junior HR specialist may be scanning your resume instead of the ATS or in addition to it, so make sure your resume includes keywords that matter. How do you know which keywords matter? Experts recommend starting with the job description for the position you are applying for. You might print it out and highlight frequently used or emphasized skills and requirements. Word-cloud-generating software can help spot the patterns, as well. Once you have your list of top five to ten keywords, use them wisely (in other words, dont make them too obvious your resume will be read by a real human at some point). Use the right numbersWhat is your lucky number when it comes to a job search? Some experts argue its 72. That is the number of hours within which you should apply for a newly posted job. Surveys have shown that 60 percent of applicants will submit their applications within the first week of the new job posting. If you wait much longer, you risk having your resume stuck in the middle of the pile as the hiring managers focus is captured by the earlier applicants.Best day to apply for a job? Some experts think its Tuesday. Research by Glassdoor says Tuesday is also the best day to schedule an interview. Whether or not you choose to stick to Tuesday as a lucky day, the bottom line of these job seeking tips and techniques is that procrastinating on job applications and returning interview scheduling calls will hurt you in the long run. You may have the best of intentions (like wanting to polish off your resume until it is absolutely perfect), but sometimes it is better to get a good resume out there timely than have a perfect resume land two weeks too late.Includ e a personalized titelbild letterPersonalizing your cover letter may seem like a time-consuming extra step and not a great job-seeking tip and technique. Many candidates struggle with composing it, so there is a temptation to simply skip it especially if the job posting does not specifically require you to submit one.My advice? When in doubt, include a cover letter anyway. As a past hiring manager, I know that cover letters can set candidates apart by conveying their professional polish, a sense of personality and a little extra color on why they are a great fit for the position. Is there a time when you should not include a cover letter? Opinions on this vary, but I believe the only cover letter you should leave out is a poorly-written one. And, of course, if the job posting specifically states that you should not send a cover letter, it is best to follow the instructions.Make yourself easy to reachA job search is a time-consuming and emotionally draining affair. I do not blame you for wanting to turn off the faucet of constant communication and hide under a blanket for a while. Unfortunately, that impulse is mora likely to hurt your efforts than help you land a great next job opportunity. One of the best tips for getting a job is to be available and quick to respond.Be sure you are responsive to recruiters and prospective employers. In most cases, they are reaching out to multiple candidates at once. Those who take the longest to reply (or make the mistake of ignoring the messages altogether) will likely not get a second chance, especially in the beginning of the hiring process. If you are not interested in an opportunity, it is best to communicate that politely and clearly. No one likes professional ghosting An honest approach will showcase your professionalism and allow everyone to focus on their mission.A quick pro job-seeking tip be sure to include your contact information within your LinkedIn profile, especially when you are in active job search mode. Y our goal is to encourage a flow of opportunities not create extra hurdles for other professionals to overcome.Send out a well-timed thank-you noteAre thank-you letters a thing of the past? I dont believe so in fact, its one of my best tips for getting a job. A quick hand-written card to acknowledge that the other professional has dedicated valuable time to meet with you can only help your candidacy. If you mention a key point or two that you have enjoyed during the conversation, or that can highlight your perfect fit for the position, include them for best results. And, just as with job applications, dont sit on your thank-you notes get them out within 24-hours while the memory of the conversation is leise fresh. Learn more about the people with whom you are interviewingNo need to engage in cyber-stalking, but you might find that the job-seeking tips and techniques of a little strategic recon before the interview can do wonders to calm your nerves. LinkedIn allows you to read throu gh other professionals profiles and pick up on key details. Perhaps you find some unexpected commonalities (like having attended the same school or being fans of the same sports team) that will help you feel more comfortable heading into a meeting with the hiring manager you have never met before.Create your own rituals and lucky charmsScience tells us that lucky charms work - if you believe they work This may well be a placebo effect in action, but if it gets you great results, who cares? Maybe you eat the same meal for breakfast before interviews (make it a balanced one by adding some protein so that science is really on your side) or wear the same lucky tie clip. Creatinghabits and rituals that help alleviate pre-interview jitters makes all the sense in the world, so do try this at homeManaging a job search requires a blend of art and science. As you look for your personal mix of solid qualifications, a well-written resume and a dash of luck, my advice is to bet on good relations hips. Networking is key when it comes to creating opportunities and advancing your career. By taking a genuine interest in other professionals, you are likely to make amazing things happen in the long run.Make your own job-search luck.
